Pianist, type-setter, improviser, member of the groups Kartet
(Pressure, ZZ, 1995 & Jellyfishing, PeeWee, 2000) and Recyclers
(Visit, ZZ, 1997), records in duet with the clarinettist François
Houle (Nancali, Songlines, 1998 & Dice Thrown, Songlines, 2002),
in solo over prepared piano (Nu-Turn, Songlines, 2003), and
with his own groups (Paintings, ZZ, 1993 & Pursuit, Songlines,
2000). Benoit Delbecq is a uniquely gifted French pianist and
keyboardist who has created his own music using ideas and techniques
from contemporary classical (Cage, Ligeti, Nancarrow), jazz,
Pygmy polyphony, European improv and other sources. He prepares
the piano with various materials such as eraser bits and carved
wooden twigs, and improvises on short, overlapping vamps and
patterns; the result is a complex, spacious sound that hardly
seems to be emanating from a single instrument.
